How should I prepare my child for the evaluation? This depends on your child’s age and level of functioning. However, in most cases, telling your child that they will be undergoing an evaluation to better understand their learning and thinking style is sufficient. Be sure to tell your child (especially younger children) that they will not have any shots or blood drawn during the appointment! It is also important that your child get a good night’s rest and have a good meal the morning of the evaluation. Additionally, please be sure your child brings any prescribed glasses/hearing aids. Lastly, please administer any prescribed medications.
What happens after I contact Dr. Scarborough? You will be contact by one of the providers to arrange an initial clinical/diagnostic interview to review your child's history (e.g., family, birth, developmental, educational, and psychosocial history). This initial session typical lasts 1 hour. The testing session will be scheduled for a separate day should it be determined that testing will be beneficial and all parties are in agreement. For parents seeking treatment for their child, depending on your child’s age and the referral questions/concerns your child will be included in all or part of the interview.
What can I expect the day of the evaluation? On the testing day, parents will be asked to have a seat in the waiting area and may be given some paperwork and questionnaires to complete while waiting. Your child and the provider will remain in the office to complete the testing portion of the evaluation. Breaks will be taken as needed throughout the testing session. Please be sure to bring in snacks and lunch. One parent/legal guardian should plan to remain on site throughout the appointment with children under the age of 18. In most cases, a one-hour feedback session will be provided on a separate day. During this appointment, results and recommendations will be reviewed; however, depending on the type and length of the evaluation the feedback session may take place on the day of testing. A comprehensive report which includes testing results, impressions, and recommendations will be provided approximately 3 weeks following the feedback session.
